About Haus of Codec

Mission: Building community through the arts and Educational Empowerment. Based in the Creative Capital, Haus of Codec is committed to ending transition-aged youth homelessness in Providence through the arts and workforce development.

Vision: To create a safer and more accessible means of housing, care, and essential services for displaced transition-aged youth.

Haus of Codec provides a safe housing space for youth ages 18 - 24 to call home and help them find their own, more permanent housing solutions and workforce development opportunities. The house hosts a food and clothing pantry, a self-service kitchen, a shared bathroom, access to essential services through partner providers, and a sense of community where there wasn't one before.

Summary

The Shelter Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operational needs of Haus of Codec’s Emergency Shelter, ensuring the completion of all program objectives, adherence to agency rules and regulations, and the safety and cleanliness of the shelter at all times. This position also will act as a point of contact for clinical oversight and directive for Haus of Codec’s client base in all housing programs including but not limited to our Emergency Shelter, Transitional Programming, Rapid Rehousing programming, and Outreach. This position ensures the compassionate and efficient provision of services to clients while supporting the agency’s mission.

Duties & Responsibilities

General

  • Ensure a safe and secure environment at the Emergency Shelter.

  • Identify systems and operations problem areas and make recommendations for improvements.

  • Maintains up-to-date local and regional resource information and disseminates it to staff as appropriate.

  • Models positive, professional behavior including through appearance and
    communication with others with a welcoming face of warmth and hospitality to all clients, volunteers, vendors, donors, and staff with boundaries and ethics in mind.

  • Supports community engagement and collaboration by developing relationships with other service providers including but not limited to Mental Health, Medical, The County, And Other Vendors.

  • Maintains an updated resource binder outlining all client Mental Health, Medical, Housing, Employment, and other resources for homeless individuals. 

  • Attends training to stay up to date on best practice standards. 

  • Attends and participates in one-on-one meetings with the Director of Youth Programs, weekly staff meetings, and team-building gatherings.

  • Provide high-quality, consistent, and high-quality services in accordance with Haus of Codec’s Mission, Vision, And Values.

  • Maintains open lines of communication with all partner providers, and educates staff and volunteers.

  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve issues and concerns that arise with clients, staff, volunteers, or day-to-day operations. 

  • Coordinate with the Director of Programs to facilitate volunteer orientations as time arises and volunteer check-in meetings.

  • Train any new volunteers and help train new case managers/staff members.

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Youth Programs, Operations Director, and/or Executive Director at any time.

Emergency Shelter

  • Ensure a safe and secure environment at the Emergency Shelter.

  • Manage the operation and activities of the shelter and properties through delegation, and manage the Shelter’s supplies through routine inventories and supply lists.

  • Monitor and maintain high standards of physical safety in the shelter as evidenced by weekly inspection reports, accident reports, investigation reports, and compliance with all safety regulations and standards.

  • Routinely review all required reports, logs, emails, etc. as needed, maintaining an organized filing system and stocked shelter/property i.e. grocery shopping, and helping coordinate donations.

  • Ensures new residents receive and understand program requirements, rules, and regulations.

  • Supervises all Shelter day-to-day activities including, training and development, scheduling, and oversight.

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Youth Programs, Operations Director, and/or Executive Director at any time.

Case Management

  • Accomplishes clients’ care by assessing treatment needs; developing, monitoring, and evaluating treatment plans and progress; and facilitating interdisciplinary approaches. 

  • Determines clients’ requirements by; determining the need for therapeutic, medical, psycho-social, and psychiatric evaluations; consulting with therapists as necessary including treatment objectives, and plans.

  • Assist in the process of applications for SNAP, Vital Records, Social Security Benefits, Securing Employment, Securing Housing, and attending Housing Clinics, as well as other necessary applications or social services to set our clients up for success.

  • Establishes schedules for weekly/monthly meetings and routines for residents and clients pertaining to their specific goals; coordinating services being provided; arranging resources, including transportation and escort.

  • Monitors cases by verifying clients’ attendance; observing and evaluating treatments and responses; advocating for needed services; obtaining additional resources; and intervening in crises.

  • Maintains clients’ records by reviewing case notes; and logging events and progress.

  • Communicates clients’ progress by attending weekly interdepartmental meetings and other evaluations such as weekly 1:1 meetings; disseminating results and obstacles to the therapeutic team; and identifying treatment influences.

  • Prepares clients’ discharge by reviewing and activity reporting out discharge plans; coordinating discharge and post-discharge requirements; and providing resources.

  • Act as a point of contact for clinical oversight and directive for Haus of Codec’s client base in all housing programs including but not limited to our Emergency Shelter, Transitional Programing, Rapid Rehousing Programing, and Outreach. 

  • Work directly in support of the senior case manager and Director of Programs when facing challenges with clients, and provide newer case managers with guidance and advice.

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Youth Programs, Operations Director, and/or Executive Director at any time.

Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years of experience in social service.

  • 1-2+ years of certified Clinical Social Work experience.

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills with the ability to relate to others.

  • Ability to work independently and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment with a strong sense of urgency.

  • Solid organizational and time-management skills.

  • Strong oral, listening, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to effectively and sensitively communicate with all levels of management.

  • Ability to cope with and defuse situations utilizing de-escalation techniques

  • Flexibility and willingness to shift priorities as needed.

  • Ability to use general office equipment, such as a computer, telephone, printer, copier, and badging system.

  • Intermediate level knowledge of Google products and ability to quickly learn new system programs.

  • Ability to set and model appropriate boundaries and maintain a calm demeanor in a chaotic setting.

  • Highly motivated, resourceful, flexible, and possesses a positive attitude and sense of humor.

  • Exhibits compassion and empathy and works well with parents and children from all ethnic, social, economic, and sexual orientation backgrounds.

Education and/or Experience

MSW, or on the pathway to MSW within 1-2 years with clinical oversight. Three to five years related to Social Work and/or Non-Profit program management experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Human services experience working with LGBTQIA++ and BIPOC youth and dealing with issues unique to homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, and physical disabilities preferred. 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to converse with and listen to people in many different settings.

  • Ability to use a computer and telephone, as well as other standard house and office equipment.

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.

  • Ability to occasionally push, pull, lift, and/or carry supplies up to 25 pounds.

  • Work takes place in a social services environment where long periods of standing, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, and going up and down stairs are all in a day’s work.
